Some programs can also help you stabilize finances so you can stay on track with court-ordered costs and restitution. Important: Getting help with rent, utilities, or food does not cancel court-ordered fines, fees, or restitution. It can make it easier to stay stable while you work on those obligations.

Before relying on financial help: confirm with your officer how lump-sum payments, back pay, or settlements might affect restitution, child support, or benefits. Keep copies of all letters and payment histories.
