Hays County Pulls Funding for Proposed $4.5M Axon AI Expansion
Hays County commissioners removed funding for a proposed 10-year Axon technology expansion, reversing an earlier budget decision while leaving the county's existing Axon agreements in place.
Hays County, Texas, has removed funding for a proposed 10-year, approximately $4.5 million expansion of Axon technology for the Sheriff's Office, reversing an earlier budget decision that had reserved money for the potential agreement.
Proposed expansion had not reached final contract approval
The September 15 action followed an earlier vote on September 1, when commissioners agreed to account for first-year funding for the proposed Axon package in county budget calculations.
That earlier action did not constitute final approval of a 10-year contract. The proposal was still being developed when commissioners revisited the funding two weeks later.
The proposed expansion was described as an approximately $4.5 million, 10-year technology package for the Hays County Sheriff's Office.
AI capabilities were part of the proposed package
The proposed expansion included additional Axon artificial-intelligence capabilities for the Sheriff's Office.
County records associated with the September 1 action documented a commitment by the Sheriff's Office not to activate Axon Draft One, or subsequently available AI functionality, without returning to Commissioners Court for approval.
Draft One is Axon's AI-assisted report-writing product. The broader proposed technology package also contemplated additional evidence-search, transcription, translation, investigative-assistance and related platform capabilities.
Commissioners redirected the funding
On September 15, 2026, commissioners voted 3–2 to remove the funding reserved for the proposed Axon expansion.
The money was redirected toward two additional corrections-officer positions within the Hays County Sheriff's Office.
The action stopped the proposed expansion in the form then under consideration. It did not terminate Hays County's broader relationship with Axon or cancel the county's existing Axon contracts.
Existing Axon relationship remains in place
Hays County was already an Axon customer before the proposed 2026 expansion.
Official county records show that commissioners approved a $570,477.60 agreement in August 2025 for Axon Justice software and storage for the District Attorney's Office. The term covered five years and one month, and the county said the system would integrate with evidence.com software already used by local law-enforcement agencies.
In October 2025, the county also authorized an Axon agreement tied to five new Sheriff's Office law-enforcement positions. That agreement used the county's existing in-car-camera and body-worn-camera/Taser master services arrangement and carried a total contract price of $187,249.30 through October 2029.
Current procurement status
The proposed 10-year expansion is no longer moving forward in the form that had been contemplated earlier in September.
No final contract number for the proposed $4.5 million expansion was established in the records reviewed. Existing Axon agreements remain separate and active unless modified through subsequent county action.
