Maricopa County Receives $1.5M for Incarcerated Veteran Reentry
A three-year U.S. Department of Labor award will expand workforce and reintegration services for incarcerated and recently released veterans in Maricopa County, Arizona.
Maricopa County has received a $1.5 million U.S. Department of Labor Incarcerated Veterans Transition Program grant to expand employment and reintegration services for veterans transitioning from incarceration.
Three-year award expands veteran reentry services
The grant provides approximately $500,000 per year for three years. Maricopa County says services will include individualized career planning, skills assessments, training, apprenticeships, work-based learning and connections with fair-chance employers in in-demand industries.
The program will serve veterans in local correctional and long-term care institutions and expand services for veterans recently released from incarceration.
Implementation builds on Smart Justice
The county will build the program on its existing Smart Justice workforce services, which provide career coaching, workforce training, job resources and paid work opportunities for justice-involved participants.
The grant will fund a full-time Program Coordinator – Veteran Reintegration to oversee implementation and strengthen partnerships with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Bound by Valor Unit, Phoenix Veterans Affairs, the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services and community organizations.
Until the position is filled, eligible veterans can access existing county Workforce Development and Smart Justice services.

Employment services connect with housing and community resources
Maricopa County says the veteran reintegration pipeline is intended to reduce employment barriers while strengthening connections to housing and other community resources as participants transition from incarceration to employment and greater economic stability.
