Confirm approval before starting

Ask the court, supervising officer, attorney, diversion coordinator, program coordinator, or referring agency whether the specific organization, location, role, and schedule are acceptable before counting any hours.

Ask how hours are documented

Before the first shift, ask whether the organization can sign a court/program log, provide a supervisor name, verify dates and hours, issue a completion letter, and respond if contacted.

Check restrictions and screening

Animal shelters, youth-serving programs, shelters, senior centers, client-facing programs, and clinical or advocacy settings may have background checks, offense restrictions, confidentiality rules, role limits, or orientation requirements.

Faith-based routes must be service-based

Community kitchens, food pantries, clothing closets, cleanup tasks, and broader community-aid work may be acceptable when approved. Worship, teaching, proselytizing, choir, or religious-service participation should not be assumed to count.

Confirm travel and county limits
